Chapter 8

Saturday, February 18, 2017

“I wish I brought a thermos of coffee. It’s getting cold sitting here.” Regina’s been talking for a long time. “It didn’t occur to you not to invite Lynn to stay with us, did it?”

Jackie’s been staring out, one hand tucked beneath her thigh and the step of the big machine. She realizes her hand has fallen asleep. She turns her head to ask, “Which time?” before she pulls the hand out from under her.

“You asked me to tell the Halloween party story and you didn’t listen.” Regina slaps Jackie’s forearm.

“Just wanted to hear your voice.” Jackie rolls her wrist and puts an arm around Regina.

“Are you cold? Let’s go.” Regina shrugs off Jackie’s arm.

“I heard most of what you said. We did have some good parties.” She grins, remembering. “It’s nice with the sun on us.” She lifts an inch to take the pressure off her butt for a second. “Sitting here reminds me of Gamblers Anonymous.”

“Gamblers Anonymous?” Regina frowns. “The bulldozer or the dump reminds you?”

“Just the step. Hard on the ass.”

“All the more reason to go,” Regina says.

“Wait till my backside wakes up. I need my butt in working order to walk.”

Regina flaps her gloved hand at Jackie’s feet. “Wiggle your toes and circle your ankles.”

“I love sitting here.” Jackie circles one ankle then the other even though she doesn’t think it’s going to help her ass. “But I thought I was done with hard metal chairs.”

“Your butt’s never going to wake up as long as you’re sitting on it,” Regina says. “Lift up again. Lean forward, put your weight on your thighs. Not too far. Okay, put your legs straight out and squeeze your butt muscles. Get the blood flowing.” Regina demonstrates.

“Okay, no more excuses,” Regina says when Jackie’s exercise routine is over.

“I made sure never to sit on a damn folding chair at our parties,” Jackie says.

“Come on, get up. You’re stalling.”

“I’m not getting up because I don’t want to leave yet. I’m happy here.”

“Okay, honey. I just worry; it’s cold, your bad hip. Grin away. You know I can’t resist that grin. We can sit awhile longer if you tell me about Gamblers Anonymous. Then we have to get you home. Warm us up.”
